St Columb’s, The Glebe House and Gallery

The Glebe House, Gallery and Gardens is located on a hilltop sloping down to Lough Gartan, with the Derryveagh Mountains and Glenveagh National Park serving as a spectacular backdrop. The Glebe House and 20 acre estate was purchased by Derek Hill, artist and collector, in the early 1950’s; his intention was to create a home and garden for himself in the wilds of Donegal that was both unique and inspiring. Hill created the garden with the help of the eminent garden designer James Russell with plants sourced from Sunningdale Nurseries.
“Russell and myself aimed to accentuate simply the natural formation of the landscape and to set off, by architectural planting, some of its best features with the idea of creating a picture composed of the wild ingredients of Donegal”.
An artist’s haven, the gardens of the Glebe Gallery are a delightful blend of the formal and informal. The gardens were designed with an artist’s eye and an artist’s confidence. There are bold drifts of foliage and points of interest everywhere. Notable features of the garden are the extensive tree collection, wildflower meadows and relaxed herbaceous borders. The Glebe House and Gallery is managed by Historic Properties Division of the Office of Public Works.
